Barlach, Ernst (1870 - 1938)

Now we move on to the last of the catagories in the arts that I have got - Sculpture.Ernst Barlach, I must note, was a playwrite but he sculpted more.

Ernst was born in 1870 in Wedel. He worked on wood, terracota, porcelain and eventually bronze (after some influence). He was, at the time, one of the only sculptors who worked with wood. He also did many marble heads.

His most famous single work, done in 1908, was called 'Shepard in the Storm'. He will be remembered most for doing a lot of memorial statues of soldiers who died in World War I in villages, towns and cities all over Germany.

After being recognised as a good sculptor Barlach began writing plays such as 'Der Arme Vetter' (The Poor Cousin) and 'Die Sündflut' (The Deluge).

Many of Barlach's works were destroyed in 1939 by the Nazis just after they shot and killed him.
