Reimenschneider, Tilman (1460 - 1531)

Finally, to conclude the chapter of the arts, is our last German, another sculptor, Tilman.

Tilman is one of the best and most famous Gothic sculptors. Born in 1460 in Würsburg, he continued to live and work there. His job was at the head of his own workshop. The workshop produced gravestones, alter pieces and such like objects.

Tilman was a typical late Gothic artist of whose works were delicate with long lines, sharpo corners, very smooth curves and over all very much exaggerated. His most famous work still stands in Creglingen, Germany. It was completed in 1501 and is called 'The Alter of a Virgin'. It has carved in it pictures of the Virgin's life and centred is a representation of the Assumption. It is considered one of the best German sculpture masterpieces of all time.

Tilman's late works change to solid broad figures and forms which suggest influence of Italian Renaissance styles.

Tilman died in 1531 at the age of 71 years old.
