Marc, Franz (1880 - 1916)
Another reasonably famous painter, I am told, is Franz Marc. Unfortunatley not very much is known about him.
He was born in 1880, Munich, and was a leading member of 'Der Blaue Reiter' painting group. Marc is best known for his animal painting 'Little Yellow Horses'. He usually drew horses or deer and seemed to express them mystically or magically. Another of his works is 'Blue Horses' in which he uses unrealistic colours and curves which is typical of his style.
In 1913 he turned to abstract paintings, which showed clashing colours and expressed uncertanty and a warning of danger. A reason for this is that pressure was mounting politically.
Soon, in 1916, he was forced to join the German army and go out to the first trench wars of World War 1.
The very year he joined he died in. He was one of the very first killed. He was then only 36 years old.
