George the 1st of Great Britain

(Reign 1714 – 1727)

George the 1st of Great Britain you may not think has anything to do with Germany, but he has because, quite simply, he is a German.

To make this as simple as possible: James the 1st married Anne of Denmark and they had two children, one of which was called Elizabeth who married Frederick the fifth. Their child, called Sophia, married Ernst Augustus. Their child was George the 1st of whom was to inherit the throne of Great Britain from the death of Queen Anne.

George the 1st didn’t speak, or ever bother to learn, English. The parliament loved it. They controlled the country for George while he thought he was. So long as George thought it was him ruling, everyone was happy. George the 1st died on June 11th, 1727. His son took over: George the 2nd.

Elizabeth 2nd (our current monarch) is George 1st‘s great, great, great, great, great, great grandchild. Bet you didn’t know that!
