Brahms, Johannes (1833 - 1897)

Born is 1833, May 7th, and living until 1897 Brahms wrote music through both theClassicaland Romanticmusical eras.

Brahms was brought up very musically by his father, who tought him violin, cello, piano and the double-bass. Like Telemann and Bach, Beethoven and Mozart, Brahms also had a famous composer as a friend. His friend was Schumann, of whom I have not included in this site (yet). Schumann at the time, wrote for a mazazine and gave very praising reports of Brahms in it, which boosted Brahms' reputation greatly.

In 1857, Brahms got a job as a conductor at a theatre. This job continued for only two years, when he travelled doing concerts. In 1863, Brahms became director of the 'Singakadamie' which lasted only one more year. He then continued touring.

In 1868, Brahms completed a greatly popular work, his 'German Requiem', which landed him into huge fame at the time. In 1874, Brahms stopped his travels or large jobs to give himself completly to his composing.

Brahms wrote for nearly every instrument, wrote for all types of orchestra (eg: Symphony, Brass, Chamber, etc.), wrote over 150 songs but he never wrote an opera.

He died in Vienna, on April 13th 1897.
