The Lake of Constance

The Lake of Constance is, as mentioned earlier, Germany's largest lake. It is almost entirely in Germany but passes over the border to Switzerland and Austria.

The lake is 208 square miles and has a depth of 252 meters*. The Lake of Constance is 400 meters above sea level.

The Lake of Constance extends North-West and South-East. At the N-W the lake forks out with two seperate sections. The northern fork is called 'Überlingersee' and the southern fork is called 'Üntersee'. The main part of the lake is called the 'Obersee'. The Rhine itself comes into the Lake of Constance from the south and goes west from Üntersee.

The lake constantly rises due to the Alpine Snows melting. The water is clear and homes many fish.

The shallow areas of the lake have been known to once have been prehistoric village sites. It was one of the largest sources of knowledge of the period in human history!

*This makes the Lake of Constance the second largest Alpine lake in the world.
